Introduction to imagery

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course aims to introduce in a simple but rigorous manner the physical concepts which are the basis of several medical spectroscopical techniques. Students will be able to understand where the information is coming from, they will be aware of the limitations, possible artifacts and side-effects of the techniques.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

General physics

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

10h of practical sessions and 10h exercices are organized.
They allow to perform a complementary view of the matter, in the practical side.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The lectures and all the related course activities are organized during the second quadrimester.

Recommended or required readings

Imagerie médicale
Bases physiques
A. Seret et M. Hoebeke
Editions de l'ulg.
+ notes complémentaires de spectroscopie

Slides of the lectures
Chapters 25, 26, and 27 of the ref. book in General Physics (J. KANE and M. Sternheim "Physics")

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exams during sessions (May-Jun. and Aug.-Sep.)

Work placement(s)

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Part of the course and exercice session were given remotely (podcasts available for the courses, detailed exercice notes on ecampus, commented video for NMR exercises) Question and answer sessions organized on the Collaborate tool Question and training exercises sent to students with interactive follow-up of corrections by email .
Students have the powerpoint of the courses and reference books

Assessment subjects

The detailed list of chapters subject to the exam is on ecampus.
Here are the titles of the main chapters
Waves and matter
Reminder on material and electromagnetic waves + The electromagnetic spectrum
Scintigraphy and PET scan
X-rays and X-ray imaging
X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy
Nuclear magnetic resonance
Interaction of electrons with matter, interaction of photons with matter
Introduction to  visible UV spectroscopy
As well as the exercises on these subjects

Assessment methods

All examination procedures will be detailed on ecampus. The exam is organized online, students will be invited to log on, on the date and time scheduled for the exam.

If a student encounters a technical problem during the taking of his test, he will be invited to contact the teaching team. The student will then present the exam online in oral form. This oral exam will consist in open questions different from multiple choice questions.
