Learning unit contents
The course follows the conventional structure.
Part 1 deals with mechanics, thermodynamics and fluids.
Part 2 deals with electricity, magnetism, waves and optics.
Mathematical notions will be presented progressively as they become necessary.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Physics describes the real world. Each topic will be dealt with through concrete observation and experimentation so as to lead students to the theoretical study of specific concepts and notions without ever emphasizing details. Examples in the pharmaceutical and biomedical field are presented to intuitively help the understanding. The course deals with the principles of physics and presents scientific methodology within the context of reasoning processes, synthesising abilities and analytic rigour.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Physics notions as learned in secondary school.
Good mathematical knowledge.
Otherwise, training sessions are scheduled in the early time of the academic year.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Practical sessions (20 hours) are MANDATORY.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
- The theoretical course (60 hours) is given in the first quadrimester, 3x per week (3x 1h45)
- Practical Lab sessions (20 hours) are MANDATORY and are given in the first quadrimester.
- Physics problems (20 hours) are given in the first quadrimester.
Students will be divided into series.

Coursebook by J. KANE and M. Sternheim "Physics" edited in English by J. Wiley & Sons, Inc.)
Mathematical booklet is edited by "les Editions de l'ULg" and is available in a combo price with the Kane book.
Laboratory notes include three booklets on eCampus.

Assessment methods and criteria
- An exam is organized in January. It deals with all topics from partim cours (theory and problems and lab). The written exam includes theoretical questions and exercises. Theory evaluation is based on multiple-choice test and open questions. Only the lab exam is oral.
- In june and september, the lab exam is written (multiple-choice test)
The note distribution is: theory 50%, exercices 30% and laboratories 20%
A form is distributed at the beginning of the year. This form can be used for exams if it is not anoted.
A non-programmable scientific calculator (without graphic screen) can be used for exams.
The success and exemption thresholds are defined by the official rules of the Medecine Faculty
