Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Starting from the basic concepts of electronic and phonon band structures, the course will describe the properties of the main classes of materials (metals, semiconductors, insulators). The emphasis will be placed on the description of some specific properties (specific heat, transport, ferroelectricity, phase transition) and their use in some paractical applications : electronic devices (diodes, transistors), data storage, magnets, sensors, actuators, ...
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of this course is to initiate the students to the microscopic aspects of the physics of materials and to give them the basic knowledge allowing them to understand the mechanisms exploited in various modern devices.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic concepts in cristallography, quantum mechanics and statistical physics (cfr. "prérequis" et "co-requis" as defined in the official program).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Informations concerning the labs will be provided in the beginning of the semester.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The oral course will content 15 modules of 2 hours and will be completed by exercises (10x 2 hours).
Recommended or required readings
Notes will be distributed to the students.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam concerns both the theory and exercices. It will include both writing and oral parts.
