Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The experimental physics course consists of the following main parts: mechanics, fluidics and electricity. Oral teaching will be systematically completed with experimental demonstrations.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Physics describes the real world. Each topic will be dealt with through concrete observation and experimentation so as to lead students to the theoretical study of specific concepts and notions without ever emphasizing details. We shall focus on fundamental theoretical notions within the students¿ field of interest while providing them with the necessary prerequisite knowledge considering 2nd-year requirements. Whenever possible, the theoretical notions from the different parts of the course will be illustrated with practical applications related to relevant practical courses.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course requires good knowledge of secondary education-level mathematics. We advise the students to attend remedial mathematics classes, which will be organized to refresh basic knowledge and bridge the gap between secondary education and bac courses.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Practical and exercises sessions are organized in order to illustrate the theoritical courses. To get benefit from these ones, the students are strongly encouraged to read the related theoretical notions before each session.
- Relevant mathematical concepts will be learnt during specific sessions.
- Two specific sessions will be devoted to the laws of movement.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

- The theoretical course (50 h) will be taught in the first term.
- 8 x 2 h of exercices are planned
- 2 laboratories of 3 h will be organized
- Remedial formative assessment workshops in mathematics and physics will be organized in the first term. The presence is optional but highly recommended for students having problems with the course.
- Remedial formative assessment workshops (20 hours) will be organized in the second term for students who failed the test in January. Sessions will begin in February.

Recommended or required readings

Reference book: Physique expérimentale (Experimental Physics) J. KANE & M. STERHEIM, Physique, Dunod, Paris, by P. Ghosez, M. Hoebeke, G. Llabrès.  Students are recommended to buy the book as it is used for both theoretical classes and practical sessions. It is available at Presses Universitaires de Liège (Sart-Tilman).
- PDF copies of course slides
- Laboratory notes The notes will be send by the intranet and posted on eCampus. The student should print them before the first laboratory session.
- Exercise notes Downloadable syllabus on eCampus web site and sent with MyULiege.
- Mathematics notes  Downloadable syllabus on eCampus web site and sent with MyUlLege.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam on theory : multiple choices questions, true/false questions, open questions with short answers, open question(s) with large answer(s). The theory quotation will be 60% of the overall quotation.
Written exam on exercices : open questions with large answers. The exercices quotation will be 30% of the overall quotation.
Written exam on laboratories : open question(s) or multiple choices questions. The laboratory quotation will be 10% of the overall quotation.
The modalities are the same for all the exam sessions.
The modalities will be effective in the absence of an official paper from Medecine Faculty.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

Any absence in an interrogation, an exam or a laboratory session must be justified by medical certificate or official certificate of exceptional circumstances (a letter of the parents is not an official document) put back to the course or sent by mail to the secretariat of the professor. Name, first name and dates of absences will clearly be indicated on the back of the certificate in block capitals.
In the week following is come-back, the student should contact the logistics (Mrs C. Prosperi) to find a date to perform the laboratory.
The presence at the laboratories is mandatory. If the student do not participate to all laboratories, he will not be accepted at the exams.
