Learning unit contents

This course is the continuation of the course of general microbiology given in Bloc2. This course is divided in three parts.
The first part covers the most frequent infectious diseases encountered in the world.
The second part is dealing with the technological tools used for diagnostic or research purposes.
The third part will include presentations by students and practicals. Indeed, it is important for students to combine medical aspects with the knowledge the most popular technologies used in routine and research.
NB. The viral problematic will be addressed in the course of medical virology (cf. Prof . N. Jacobs ) .

Part I. - Respiratory tract infections  - Urinary infections - Sexually transmitted diseases - Gastro-intestinal disaeases - Arthropod-borne infections (Lyme disease and malaria). - Mechanisms of resistance to antibiotics, antifungals and antiparasitics.
Part II.
Techniques applied to the diagnosis or the study of infections : Culture, mass spectrometry, serology (antigen and antibody detection), molecular techniques  used in microbiology: PCR methods, molecular typing and sequencing.
Part III.
This part includes the discussion and presentation given by the students on a topic they can choose given that it is related to the microbiology. They will present the content in groups of 3 or 5 students. This will address the research side applied to the field of microbiology, either clinical or fundamental research.
Practicals (TP1 to 4) will be also organised.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course students will have developed knowledge in medical microbiology: knowledge of infectious agents, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical diagnosis, and treatment of infectious diseases addressed. They will know the necessary tools for the characterization of microorganisms for diagnostic or fundamental research. They will be able to have a more critical reading of scientific articles in the field of microbiology. The students will have experienced the group work and the oral presentation facing his pairs. it will also positively impact on the interactions with the lecturer.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will be presented in the form of lectures and discussions of scientific papers. Practical sessions are also organized. Tutorials are presented in the form of workshops that illustrate the lectures through demonstration of diagnostic tests, microscopical and macroscopical observations (bacterial and fungal cultures, observation of adult parasites), projection of videos. On the other hand, a video will be made available as a virtual tour of the medical microbiology laboratory.
 
Furtherliore the students will have the opportunity to present a topic in relation with the course. They will be abble to work with 3 to 5 of their peers.
 
A feed-back is proposed at the end of the course. It is important to receive the feelings of the students about the cours in order to improve the contents.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment will take the form of 40 multiple choice questions (50%) (including theory and TP4), and two questions with short answer (20%). The cotation for praticals will account for 10% of the points and the cotation for oral presentation of papers will account for 20%.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Normal courses will be replaced by diaporama's with comments or not. Visioconferences will be organised with students in order to answer to specific questions. Quiz with answers will be proposed.

Assessment subjects

Courses will be decreased and praticals are excluded form the course.
