Schedule

Schedule online

Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

We will cover the following topics.
- Polynomials.
- Introduction to vector spaces
- Matrix diagonalisation.
- Some tools from calculus :  polynomial approximation, convergence of series, ...

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of the course is to offer to the future computer scientist a set of mathematical tools that will be useful for his own discipline. Whereas every chosen topic will be introduced in a rigorous manner, which is proper to mathematics, we wish to maintain a constant interaction between concrete problems and their formalization.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The course "MATH2019-1 Mathématiques pour l'informatique 1" is prerequisite to this course.
More specifically, we will build on the theory of complex numbers, convergence of sequences, functions of one real variable and matrices.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course takes place during the first semester. The schedule can be viewed on Celcat.
The course is divided into a theoretical part provided by the teacher and exercise sessions provided by a teaching assistant. The lectures aims at presenting the theoretical part of the course. The exercice lessons have a double objective : first to illustrate the concepts and results of the theoretical part, and second provide applications of the theory.
The exercises sessions will be followed by on-line series of exercises via the WIMS plateform.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

This is a face-to-face course, given on the blackboard. Some computer-aided illustrations might be used.

Recommended or required readings

A syllabus is available at http://www.discmath.ulg.ac.be/charlier/enseignement.html. The oral course itself will delimit the material for the exam.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam with theory and exercices. The exercices will be of the same kind as those seen in the exercises sessions. The theoretical part of the exam will contains statements and definitions, as well as one or two proofs of results that we will have seen during the course.
Several WIMS exercises series have to be realized. The due dates are fixed during the semester. The obtained WIMS score counts for 10% of the exam.
For the second session, the students can choose between keeping the WIMS score they obtained during the year or starting again the whole set of WIMS series. In the second case, the WIMS series will be made available shortly after the results of the first session - beginning of July - until the day before the exam. The choice of the student has to be communicated to the teacher the day of the second session exam.

Work placement(s)

None.

Organizational remarks
