All year long, with partial in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The content of the course depends on the topic (statistics or probability) and on the current activities of the research units.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
After the course, the student should have acquired some research skills, as getting the most important messages out of seminars, finding appropriate references for a specific research question, summarizing a scientific paper, producing some outputs (either a paper or a seminar presentation)...
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
It is assumed that the student has a really good background in statistics and/or probability.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The activities will be coordinated by the supervisor of the student. These may take the following forms:
- Attendance to internal or external seminars;
- Participation to "reading groups" on a specific research paper or a given reference book;
- Additional developments in the master thesis
- ...
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
This course requires an active participation of the student. He/she will be expected to work on his/her own and to present the results of his/her research to the promotor, as well as to other members of the research unit if suitable.
Recommended or required readings
The recommended reading (scientific papers or books, mostly in English) will be specified by the supervisor.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final grade will take into account the overall work made by the student during the year. A final presentation (on a topic that will be specified beforehand) will also enter into the grade.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The course is aimed as a individual tutoring for students who are thinking of starting a PhD in statistics or probability with one of the professors who are in charge of the course. In order to get access to the course, the student needs to have the approval of one of the professors.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
The organisation of the research problems 3 and 4 has been adapted as follows:
- While the statement of problem 3 could still be explained face-to-face, the statement of problem 4 was sent to the students by email;
- The writing of a 3-4 page report as well as a distance presentation (via skype of LifeSize) replace the traditional presentation.
Assessment subjects
The assessment will be based on the following parts:
- A additional development of the master thesis
- Preparation and presentation of 4 research problems.
Assessment methods
The evaluation is organised over the whole year with the following weighting: 40% for the additional part of the master thesis and 60% for the research problems.
