Learning unit contents

  • a) Methodological introduction : the notion of literature. Outline of the sociocultural situation of the countries of the Francophony. Introduction to the «gravitational model».
  • b) History and evolution of the French-speaking literature of Belgium, in its relationships with the french and belgian societies : centrifugal phase (1830-1920), centripetal phase ( 1920-1960 ), dialectical phase ( 1960-2003).
  • c) Specificities and constants of the French-speaking literature of Belgium.
  • d) Présentation of important events and questions of the French-speaking literature of Belgium.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able:

  • To use the institutional approach of the literary fact as a conceptual framework to think of the relationships between the peripheral French-speaking literatures and the Parisian center;
  • To correlate the cultural facts and the social facts;
  • To apply to singular objects the overview of the situation of the French-speaking literatures of the North which will have been given to him;
  • To implement a thorough knowledge of the French-speaking literature of Belgium and its history.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

It is desirable that the student possesses a good knowledge of the history of the modern French literature as well as the main lines of the political, social and economic history of Belgium.

Recommended or required readings

J.-M. Klinkenberg et B. Benis, La littérature belge. Précis d'histoire sociale, Bruxelles, Labor, 2005. This book contains a detailed bibliography of the main references in the concerned domains. A list of compulsory readings is supplied (available via «My ULg»).

Assessment methods and criteria

The examination will be a written test, and will concern both the course and the program of readings. Besides precise questions, the student will also be brought to make a long argued answer in essay style.
