Learning unit contents

Historical and theoretical introduction to main currents of literary criticism in France, from Sainte-Beuve to Barthes: postulates, objects, methods. In the second part, questions of literary criticism vs. theory will be examined.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Basic knowledge of the main concepts of the theory of language and literary theory.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

15 hours of theory and 15 hours of practical work.

Recommended or required readings

Recommended reading: Antoine Compagnon, Le Démon de la théorie, Paris, Seuil, 1998; rééd. coll. "Points". A bibliography will be distributed, picking up on the essential texts of the main currents in the history of French literary criticism.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination based on a paper.
