Learning unit contents
The prerequisite for this course is LOGO0019-1: Voice assessments and speech & language therapy techniques for the treatment of dysphonia.
It is composed of three parts : The first one focuses on listening to voices with no complaints or disorders, then dysphonic and dysodic voices (disorders of the singing voice). Students will be trained to distinguish between these types of voices, grade their quality according to perceptual scales, and compare them per pair. The second part focuses on the singer's vibrato and formant. We shall define the singer's vibrato and formant using a theoretical then perceptual approach. The third part concerns vocal feminisation. This may seem to have nothing to do with the treatment of dysodia. And yet, the prerequisites for the treatment of dysodia serve in the treatment of voices seeking femininity. This is why this part is included in this course.
Specific to 2013-2014 :
Guest speaker: Pauline Larrouy-Maestri will present her work on vocal precision.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aims to :
- Teach students about the difficulties encountered during the perceptual assessment, how to avoid the pitfalls and aim at making an objective analysis.
- Give students the possibility of assessing and offering treatment plans to patients who are singers and those seeking vocal feminisation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course requires the students' presence. It is taught using slides. The course includes numerous sound extracts for illustrative purposes. In addition, the part concerning treatment is illustrated with videos showing patients undergoing treatment. It is forbidden to record or film classes as this would break the basic code of ethics protecting the patients. The teacher is open to questions from the students and the classes are interactive. Hence, classes can vary from one year to the next.
Recommended or required readings
Students are given a reading list that can vary from one year to the next. It includes works associated with the singing voice and vocal feminisation. It also includes articles written in English dealing with research and studies conducted in all of the abovementioned sections.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam includes two open questions and a project to be completed over the year in connection with the classes specific to voice. One question is based on theory while the other requires reflection. The project is presented to a small panel at the end of the year composed of D. Morsomme, P. Larrouy-Maestri and possibly a speech & language therapist.

Assessment methods
Due to Covid-19, the exam's modalities have been changed. The examination will no longer be a written examination but an oral examination. It will be done via web platform (LifeSize). Marion Hubin, the assistant of the Voice Unit will be present during the exam as an external observer. I foresee a duration per student between 20 and 30 minutes. The examination will take place over three days. More informations to contact you the day of the examination will be send by my Uliege.
In order to avoid cheating, the following rules will be adopted:
1. You must be alone in the room you will choose for the day of the exam.
2. You must show proof that no lectures, papers, diagrams, figures, summaries are present on the desk, walls or floor. A quick tour of the room will be required. We also will ask you to remove any mobile phones, tablets or other electronic objects from around you.
3. We ask you to connect if possible via cable and not via the wi-fi network.
4. If the connection is interrupted, the question you are answering will be automatically cancelled. Another question will then be proposed.
