Learning unit contents

Students will be asked to read L'Histoire de l'Egypte by N. Grimal, so that the course can be managed, on this common basis, as a seminar of reflexion on the nature of the sources used to understand and write the history of Ancient Egypt. In this context, the course will deal with: the purpose of ancient Egyptian written sources and their archaeological dimension; the complementarity of History and Archaeology, and its methodological implications; monumental art (in royal and private contexts) as a source for historical research; pharaohcentrism and the historical role of the elite in egyptological sources.
