Learning unit contents

The course begins with a short introduction to the historical and sociological background to Caribbean literature. The rest of the course is devoted to the discussion of selected poems, short stories and novels, most of them written by contemporary writers around the theme "Jewishness and the Holocaust in Caribbean literature"

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to anglophone Caribbean Literature and trauma studies with a discussion of representative literary works.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of English.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

First term, 2 hours a week.

Recommended or required readings

Poems, short stories and critical essays will be available from the beginning of the course.
Novels to be discussed in class: Michelle Cliff, Abeng (Plume) David Dabydeen, A Harlot's Progress (Vintage) Caryl Phillips, The Nature of Blood (Vintage)

Assessment methods and criteria

Written essay and oral examination.
