Learning unit contents

The course will be devoted to the "Windrush Generation", a phrase that refers to the people from the Caribbean who settled in England after the Second World War. The course will start with an introduction to the historical and political context of the Windrush Generation and will then focus on the discussion of literary texts.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Introduction to "Black British" literature with a discussion of representative literary works.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good knowledge of English.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course will be taught in seminar format. Students will be expected to participate actively.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Second term, 2 hours a week.

Recommended or required readings

Selected reading material will be available at the beginning of the course. The following novels will be analysed in class:
Beryl Gilroy, In Praise of Love and Children (Peepal Tree).
Caryl Phillips, The Final Passage (Vintage).
Andrea Levy, Small Island (Tinder).

Assessment methods and criteria

Written essay and oral examination.
