Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The following techniques will be used:
- Annotated Powerpoint-presentations, enriched with on-line bibliographical references and links to on-line references which will help the students understand the course and write the final paper
- On-line work sessions during which the Powerpoint presentations and the students' personal research will be discussed
- Discussion forum

Assessment subjects

The evaluation will focus on (1) the students' understanding of the main notions and ideas at the core of (historical) sociolinguistics, (2) the main elements with respect to linguistic variation (incl. the norm issue) and contemporary changes in standard Dutch, and (3) the students' capacity to use the relevant concepts and ideas in a critical presentation and analysis of a (historical) sociolinguistic issue.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist in a well-structured and argumented paper in which the students critically analyse a (historical) sociolinguistic problem on the basis of the scientific litterature and the notions studied in class.
