Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course has a C1-B2 CEFR level (C1 for reading comprehension and listening comprehension).

  • It continues the development of reading, data gathering, and note-taking using texts or sets of texts and authentic video files (as started in the English Level One course).
  • It also focuses on research, analysis, synthesis and writing capacities as well as oral presentation and listening comprehension skills.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • analyze English scientific literature,
  • follow oral presentations and expert interviews in English,
  • present scientific information in correct and consistent English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

English Level One for Biologists (taught in the second year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biology) i.e. LANG3018 or equivalent (for example: IELTS 5.5-6 or Cambridge Advanced English A-C).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course features a total of 20 classes. Each class requires a long preparation which is essential and mandatory.
There are no ex-cathedra lectures but rather language seminars in which students will be asked to take part regularly and actively.
There will be one formal oral presentation and various written assignments to complete over the year. These are compulsory tasks. Should students fail to do their presentation and/or to hand in their assignments at the deadline, they will not be allowed to sit the first-session exam.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The in-class course is taught to 25 to 35 students for two hours each week. There will be a total of 20 classes (11 x 2-hour classes in Q1 and 9 x 3-hour classes in Q2).
Together, preparation, active participation, oral presentations and written assignments during the year account for 35% of the final grade.

Recommended or required readings

Level 2 English for Biologists course notes compulsory. Internet access recommended.

Assessment methods and criteria

Written exam in June (listening, note-taking and summarising + exercises based on a scientific article), oral exam in June and continuous assessment of progress through preparation, class participation, online exercises, oral presentation and various written assignments.
Students who are absent for more than 30% of the classes without valid justification (e.g. a doctor's note) will not be permitted to sit the exam. The student will consequently be marked as 'absent' for the course.
The classwork mark is always taken into account (regardless of the session).

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

  • Completing reading comprehension tasks from the syllabus, either with the help of an online key or via eCampus exercises.
  • Completing online listening comprehension tasks based on those in the syllabus.
  • Short written assignments
  • Completion of the critical review
Those who have not yet given an oral presentation in class must hand in an audio/video version of their presentation.

Assessment subjects

For students who pass the course with their continuous evaluation mark, there will be no exam.

Students who do NOT pass the course with their continuous evaluation mark will be asked to participate in an oral exam in which they define terms and critically analyse a text taken from the part of the syllabus seen in class before the Easter holidays. Concretely, this means all practical units except Unit 15 Practical - Bioeconomy.

Assessment methods

Students whose continuous evaluation mark is below 50% will be contacted by e-mail by 11/05.

For students who pass the course (i.e. have over 50%) with their continuous evaluation mark, there will be no exam. The marks will be distributed as follows:

  • Q1 test: 30%
  • Critical review: 30%
  • Oral presentation: 40%
Students who do NOT pass the course with their continuous evaluation mark (i.e. have under 50%) will be asked to take part in an oral exam (approximately 15 minutes) via a video-conferencing tool.
  • Define 3 terms from the part of the syllabus seen before the Easter holidays.
  • Choose a text from the part of the syllabus seen before the Easter holidays and critically analyse it.
The only possible mark for this oral exam will be 10/20. Please sign up for this exam via the doodle provided by your teacher by 15/05.

Students with an unjustified absence for the Q1 test, or students who have not submitted either a critical review or oral presentation  and have less than 10/20 for their continuous evaluation mark will be marked 'absent' for the first session exam and will not be able to take the oral exam. Those students will therefore take the exam in the second session (August or September).
