Learning unit contents

The course is divided into two main parts. It will focus on the one hand on oral communication, and on the other hand on written communication in English with a revision of the English grammar.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

In agreement with the ILOs, the course aims at developing and strengthening the four language skills (oral and written expression, listening and reading comprehension). The objective is to give the students who do not have a sufficient level of English (or who haven't studied English for some time), the possibility to reach the B2 level (the level usually required to attend the English part 2 course).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students should have the B1 level at least.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course particularly insists on practising English.
The oral communication course will propose listening and speaking activities related to topics concerning the business world (discussions, role plays and case studies). Vocabulary activities (mainly business vocabulary) will also be organised.
In the written communication course, the students will have to review the main grammar items and to hand in several assignments, which will allow them to practice and to assess their level.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is taught 2 hours a week face-to-face and 2 hours online, that is 4 hours a week (2x2h).
Students are required to prepare some exercises at home.

All the course notes will be given in class by the teacher and will also be available on Lol@.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral communication course = 50% of the total mark
- 10%: in-class assessment  - 40%: January exam: oral exam and listening comprehension

Written communication course = 50% of the total mark
- 10%: in-class assessment (two essays) - 40%: January exam: vocabulary + an essay based on one of the 'business' topics seen in class + (grammar exercises) + reading comprehension
 
In the resit August exam, the entirety of the written exam's material will have to be studied and presented, regardless of the passed/failed parts during the written exam. If one the the two parts (written exm/oral exam) is passed in the first session, the related mark will be maintained in the caulculation of August's mark (except if the student wishes to re-sit the concerned part, in which case the mark obtained in August will automatically replace the first session's, be it better or worse).
The oral exam in second session will be an individual exam with the teacher.

Organizational remarks

The course is organised in two sessions of two hours during the first semester (in class and online).

The students who attend this course will automatically have to take the course English 3 - part 2 during the second semester.
