Learning unit contents

This course aims to develop the students' skills in spoken scientific English (namely their note-taking and responding ability in lectures in the field of biomedical sciences) .
It is an advanced ESP course (CEFR) levels C1 for listening and note-taking skills, B2 for speaking).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The purpose of this course is to teach the students how to take notes efficiently during a scientific lecture in English in order to
(1) be able to answer accurate questions 
(2) be able to write an abstract of the seminar
(3) respond on the subject of the lecture in English.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Pratique de l'Anglais Scientifique  (compulsory scientific English course in 3rd year of the Bachelor's Degree in Biomedical Sciences) or equivalent (e.g. IELTS 6 or Cambridge Advanced English A- C).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Several learning methods will be used
(1) Large group seminar for writting and listening skills
(2) Small group seminar for speaking skills
(3) Online seminar for writting and listening skills

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is comprised of:


  • 3 large group seminars
  • 3 small group seminars
  • 4 online seminars

Recommended or required readings

The theoretical course notes will be handed out in class.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exam in January. It consists in a listening comprehension and note-taking exercise on the basis of a scientific lecture.

You will have access to several online seminar.  

Assessment subjects

Online exam - 2 hours
During the exam you will have access to an oline seminar.  You will then write an abstract and answer to several content questions.
A training session will be organized during the "white week"
