Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Surface, drip and sprinkling irrigation engeneering formation After completing the course the student is expected to
- understand the hydraulic functioning of soil and plant and how they interact - compute and measure crop water needs - provide irrigation scheduling - use electrical resistivity tomography to study the soil-plant continuum - Understand the working process and the design of the different irrigation systems (surface irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, drip irrigation). - Understand, evaluate and manage a problem of salinity. - Incorporate social and cultural aspects in irrigation management

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

- Plant physiology - Introduction to bioclimatology - Edaphology - Hydrology - Applied fluid mechanics - Transport and distribution of fluids

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

MOOC Irrigation (FUN platform) with live Q&A session
Drainage course divided into video pieces of ca. 10 min
Automated irrigation project: - control unit and sensors connected to the web, data continuously available on virtual server - collaborative programming of the automated system through the WatWall project on GitHub - possibility of one live team per week with technician and/or teacher - exercise sessions with podcast, statement and 'live Q&A'. - excursion replaced by a videoconference with Dr. Pieter Janssens

Assessment subjects

  • MOOC -> eCampus questionnaire
  • Project -Individual presentations on the progress of the project during the semester -Final project report
  • Exercise sessions (aquacrop, drainage, pressure drop) -> report
