Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Newspapers and periodicals, audio- and visual recordings and oral testimonies are more than primary sources for the researcher in contemporary history. The course will provide B3 students with theoretical knowledge and analysis methods which will allow them to be better prepared for the following steps of their schooling. In addition, the course will also introduce them to textometrical analysis, applied to press articles or political speeches.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The students should be able to use the theoretical knowledges and the practical competences gained during the year to realize their end-of-cycle written work and pursue their curriculum at MA level. This will allow them, after thoughtful choice, to select a subject for their MA thesis requiring the use and application of the principles evoked hereabove.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Follow at the same time or having followed the Exercises in contemporary history (I / II) is an asset.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will be divided in 4 segments of 3 seances each (12 weeks).
1) Introduction to documentary ressources relating to newspapers and periodicals (C. Lanneau) and analysis method of press forms (G. Geuens)
2) Introduction to textometry (D. Longrée)
3) Theoretical introduction to oral sources (C. Lanneau) and practice of oral interviews (D. Laureys, from IHOES, et L. Van Velthem, from IHOES and the "Plateforme Mémoire orale FWB")
4) Introduction to documentary ressources relating to audio- and visual sources (C. Lanneau) and analysis method (J. Hamers).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course will be given in face-to-face and will be complemented by exercises.
Recommended or required readings
Assessment methods and criteria
Every segment will be evaluated separately, during a practical exercise (4 times 5 points).
A weakness in one segment can find compensation in an other.
Quite contrary, a paper not delivered in good time and continuous absences during the working sessions will be sanctioned by a zero note for the whole course.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
Modules 1 and 2 were delivered before the health crisis.
Module 3 was partially delivered in the form of ppt presentations.
Module 4, which could not be delivered remotely, was removed. Introductory notes will be provided online.
The teachers reserve the possibility to organize a special day at the beginning of next academic year to deliver the unseen subject. It will be strongly recommended to all students enrolled in this year's HIST0178 course.
Assessment subjects
Only the modules 1 and 2 will be assessed in June and September.
Assessment methods
As initially planned, Module 1 (G. Geuens) was the subject of a written work. It will be worth 50% of the grade.
Module 2 (D. Longrée) will be assessed by means of a short individual work, to be sent to the teacher by email on the date set and to be discussed in a Lifesize oral. It will be worth 50% of the grade.
A weakness in one segment can find compensation in an other.
Quite contrary, a paper not delivered in good time and continuous absences during the working sessions will be sanctioned by a zero note for the whole course.
