Learning unit contents

The course will be dedicated to the history of political thought in the Renaissance (1350-1550). It also takes part in a coherent teaching program proposed by « Transitions. U.R. sur le Moyen Âge & la première Modernité ».
The course will include the following chapters: 1. Methodology and introduction to the sources of the history of political thought; 2. Forms of political power (Empire, Republics, princely states); 3. The Great Schism and the conciliar theory; 4. The social order: the three orders of feudalism; 5. The questioning of the sovereign power and the tyrannicide; 6. Millenarianism and "challenge" to the social order. The course will develop connections with other courses, such as History of Humanism, Modern History and History of Burgundian States. For each chapter, bibliographical references will be provided. Those works will not be part of the final test. The final exam will consist in an oral test based on student notes. Some connections will be made with the seminar « Les Rouages de l'État bourguignon », which will take place at the University of Liège all along year 2016-2017. Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

30 hrs. Venue and timetable: First term, schedule to be fixed during a special session announced at the beginning of next academic year. However students interested are kindly requested to mail me now.
