Learning unit contents

The "Introduction to Japanese Art" course presents a general overview of the japanese artistic productions, from prehistory up until the contemporary creations. Architecture, painting and sculpture will be developed chronologically, to allow for a perception of the evolution of styles throughout the various periods of Japanese Art History. The influence of the Japanese arts on the European productions at the end of the 19th century will also be introduced.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Essay in lieu of the 4 lessons devoted to modern and contemporary Art in Japan.
I ask for a bit of curiosity from the students: read once the rest of the syllabus and search the Internet for the works of art mentioned in those last pages (this is not part of the exam subject).

Assessment subjects

The written examination will focus only on the topics seen in class, thus from Japan prehistoric periods to the architecture of Azuchi-Momoyama Jidai.

Assessment methods

The test will be a written examination organized by the e-campus platform. As you will have access to your notes and the syllabus, the exam will focus on exploiting the acquired knowledge.
