Learning unit contents
Theory
The course is focused on the following topic: "Reception and theories of Ancient Egyptian image". As a continuation of the BA 2 course, it deals with the history of Ancient Egyptian imagery in the West from Antiquity till nowadays, the way this particular art was perceived outside its original context of creation and how Western civilization gradually built its own representation(s) of Ancient Egyptian art. This encounter of cultures and this cultural construction of Ancient Egyptian image in collective (as well as scholarly) Western mind are then used to examine the current trends in Ancient Egyptian Art History as a discipline, as well as the methodological means that allow improving our understanding of the meaning of Ancient Egyptian Art as an artistic as well as a metaphysical system of representing reality.
