Learning unit contents

The Skills Workshops offer a large choice of themes covering a range of different topics. Contents vary a lot from one workshop to another. This year, the workshops offered are :
- Négociation raisonnée (J-Y Girin)
- Communication en entreprise (F. Neirinckx)
- Gestion de projet (T. Chantraine)
- Créer et gérer son réseau professionel (B. Philippart de Foy)

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The Skills Workshops aim at four main objectives :
* to develop student's relational and managerial skills; * to develop student's creativity and entrepreneurial spirit; * to develop student's ethical and critical mind; * to develop student's professional project
These are coherent with the school's key learning outcomes :
Relational skills contribute to student's general communication (KLO 4) and their ability to work in an interational and multicultural team (component of KLO 2). Managerial skills help students in KLO 1 to 3 (strategy, implementation, quality and performance control).
Creativity and entrepreneurial spirit are an essential component of KLO 5: Adaptability.
Ethics and a critical mind are an essential component of KLO 2 : Implementation.
Each workshop focuses on one specific skill which contributes to the four aims mentioned above. More specific learning outcomes are defined in each module.
Generally speaking, a workshop will give each student several occasions to practice the aimed skill, to get extensive and personal feedback on strengths and weaknesses, as well as strategies to improve performance. The necessary tools to go on learning about these skills after the module will also be acquired.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Normally, workshops do not have any prerequisites, every student of the program may register for them. If an exception should be implemented, it would be signalled during the specific enrollment in each workshop.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Skills Workshops are based on a « learning by doing » method. They involve students into complex situations where they will have several occasions to practice their skills, to identify their weaknesses and to improve through practical experience. These interactive workshops are designed for small numbers of students, which allows to give them personal feedback and coaching. They also emphasize contact with the professional world and multidisciplinary perspective.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Each worksop counts 4 face-to-face work sessions of 4 hours and some homework linked with the workshop's theme. Depending on the workshop, this could be, among others, visiting conferences, taking part in field observations or travels, or designing presentations or reports.
To validate the 4 ECTS of the Skills Workshops, each student must take part in two different workshops.

Recommended or required readings

Specific readings can be asked in each workshop. These will be mentionned in the first session of the workshops.

Assessment methods and criteria

Skills Workshops are assessed during the working sessions. There is no independent exam at the end of the year. Because of their interactive structure, it is offten difficult to set up a second session for the Skills Workshops. However, if a part of the expected work can be improved by the students without taking part in the whole workshop again, it is sometimes possible to improve one's marks. In case of a second session, please contact your workshop pilot and ask him if and how this can be done. A failed workshop leads to a new inscription in the next year.
The students' performances in each workshop are assessed by a mark on 20. The average of these marks is the final mark of the course, which will be credited for 4ECTS at the end of the program.
If a mark lower than 10/20 is obtained in one of the workshops, this mark will replace the average as the global mark of the course. Thus it is impossible to pass the course if a workshop has been failed.
Marks of successful workshops are automatically kept until the creditation of the whole course.
In order to encourage the choice of workshops with a real learning ambition, a note of 10/20 will be awarded to any student fulfilling the three following conditions : (1) active participation to all face-to-face sessions; (2) invested completion of every assignment given in the workshop; (3) implementation of a self-development strategy for the aimed skills. Over 10/20, the mark depends on workshop-specific criteria, which always include the student's progression compared to his / her previous starting level.
The in-session assessment and the low number of sessions make active participation in the workshops mandatory. Official justification will be asked for each absence to a session and unjustified absence will be sanctioned on the final mark. A workshop where at least two sessions have been missed cannot be validated.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

As you will have noticed, the measures taken against the epidemic of Covid-19 have led to a transfer of the teaching methods towards distant learning. The workload of this course is unchanged. Except in very rare cases, where it will be mentionned to you individually, the workshops will alltake place, even in this distance-adapted form.

The assessment modes of the workshops are unchanged in their online version. The presence in the class-sessions of the workshop are replaced with an active participation to the online seminars and activities proposed.
