Learning unit contents

This class is meant as an introduction to the (internal and external) history of the Dutch language. It deals with the following issues:

  • Basic concepts: standard language, standard Dutch, different standardisation processes.
  • Historic standardisation of the Dutch language.
  • New process of standardisation in the Netherlands and Flanders at the end of the 20th century.
  • Variation and linguistic change

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

1) Understanding of the different processes of standardisation of the Dutch language 2) Ability to use specialised literature in a critical manner, with a view to deepening the student's knowledge in the field.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Understanding of written and spoken Dutch. If required, this course can be linked to other curriculum courses:
Followed by: Linguistique diachronique néerlandaise.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Critical reading and presentation of the relevant scientific litterature. Analysis of examples that are representative of various stages and/or evolutionary mecanisms.

Timetable and session: 30 hours - 2nd quarter.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The following techniques will be used:
- Annotated Powerpoint-presentations, enriched with on-line bibliographical references and links to on-line references which will help the students understand the course
- On-line work sessions during which the Powerpoint presentations and the students' questions will be discussed 
- Discussion forum

Assessment subjects

The evaluation will focus on the following issues:
- Main elements with respect to the origin(s) of language(s) and their genetic classification, incl. the notion of language family. Special attention will be paid to the Germanic language family, its origins, geographical implementation.
- Main elements about the history of the Dutch language: origins, main caracteristics at different stages of its development (Old Dutch, Middel Dutch, Modern Dutch), main chages leading to contemporary Dutch.
- Standardization process of the Dutch language in the Netherlands and in Belgium, incl. the identifcation of the differences and similarities between the two areas.
- Reflection on the relationship between internal and external language history.
