Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course contains 6 chapters:
1. Gemmology
2. Infrared spectroscopy
3. Raman spectroscopy
4. Mössbauer spectroscopy
5. Electron microscopy
6. Experimental mineralogy

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course, is to teach to future geologists several modern mineralogy techniques. We would like to go out of the strict framework on mineralogy, by opening doors towards archaeometry, gemmology, and characterization of inorganic materials (microfossils, ...).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

The basics of Mineralogy, inorganic chemistry, and spectroscopy have to be known (levels BAC1, BAC2 and BAC3).

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Practicals of gemmology (use of refractometer, measurement of density), interpretation of infrared, Mössbauer, and Rama sectra. Demonstration of a scanning electron microscope.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face learning. Practicals are obligatory.

Recommended or required readings

The complete written course is available via the link bellow.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral examination for theory. An analytical report, concerning a mineralogical sample, may be asked to evaluate the practicals.

Work placement(s)

None.
