Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course concerns the basics of Mineralogy, for students in Bloc2 Geology. The main chaptes are:
1. Reflected light microscopy.
2. Crystal chemistry.
3. Macroscopic identification of minerals.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

This course has a double goal: identify minerals in hand samples, and with the polarizing microscope (reflected light).

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

For this course, prerequisite basic knowledges are necessary (level Bloc1): mathematics, trigonometry, physics, optics, and inorganic chmistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Numerous hours of practical identification of minerals under the microscope. The macroscopic identification of minerals is not included in the hours mentioned in the programm of this course (personal supplementary training).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face learning. It is absolutely necessary to attend all practicals.

Recommended or required readings

Book to buy: F Hatert. Minéralogie: connaître et reconnaître les minéraux. Editions Ellipses, Paris. Price: 35 Euros.

Assessment methods and criteria

Examinations in June. Oral examination for theory. 2 practical examinations for microscopy and macroscopic identifcation.
No partial dispenses at examinations.

Work placement(s)

3 days of field-trip are organized in the Eifel region, Germany.
