Learning unit contents

  • Brief introduction to static forces (graphical approach), resistance and behaviour of materials.
  • Presentation of the functioning of standard structural elements.
  • Analysis of cases.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Thanks to an approach as direct and intuitive as possible, students get the tools so as to understand and grasp the impact of the structural system on the architecture of a building.
  • The students acquire further technical and scientific device ton confirm the intuitive approach.
At the end of this course, the students will be able to design future projects taking into account the structural requirements as early as possible in the design process.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

None

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Short exercises done in class, in groups or individually. Analytical work of existing buildingq and presentation of these analyses to the other students of the class.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Face-to-face. Slideshow during ex cathedra class, along with some documentation if necessary.

Assessment methods and criteria

Evaluation of the presentations of existing buildings: 50%
Quiz at the end of the courses when existing buildings have been presented: 25% Individual evaluation at the end of the year (oral examination with written preparation possibly during the same time): 25%
Students who will obtain at least a mark of 14/20 for the evaluation of work made during the year may ask to be relieved from the individual evaluation.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

The "ex-cathedra" courses have been given normaly.
The teacher is available for the students on Lifesize during the scheduled teaching periods to answer their questions on their presentations.
Meetnigs outside these periods are possible (take an arrangement by e-mail)

Assessment subjects

The presentations made by the students.

Assessment methods

The short presentations will be marked fromt the file (1/3 of the total mark).
Long presentations by Lifesize will be marked (2/3 of the total mark).
The students must attend the long presentations of all groups. The teacher may ask questions to all students during the presentations to ensure that they are present and listening.
There will be no quizz after teh presentations.
Students who cannot attend the long presentation (problems of connexion, difference of time zone) will be interviewed orally at a later stage (date to be arranged) to ensure that they read and understood the files of the presentations (that they will receive).
