Learning unit contents
The objective of this course is to provide the students with fondamental knowledges allowing designing building structures. In particular, the following concepts will be addressed:
- Functional requirements such as acoustic performance, fire safety, ...
- Basic building elements (roofing, flooring, wall, joints, foundations, facade ...)
- Construciton techniques
- Building types (single-storey buildings, multi-storey, high-rise ...)
- ...
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course, the students will be able to:
- Conceive the structural scheme of a building construction;
- Select the most appropriate building elements;
- Establish the plans, including sections and details.

Frontal lectures.
Some lectures will be seminars with lecturers from outside the University (practitionners from industry)
Site visits could be organised.
The presence of the students at the seminars and at the site visits is mandatory.

Assessment methods and criteria
Closed-book written exam
A student who has not participated to all the mandatory activities will not be allowed to present the examination. A mark "A" will be attributed in this case (except if a specific justification is provided and accepted by the professors which will analyse the justificiation with equity).

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
E-learning through the use of commented PowerPoint presentations and the use of reference documents.
The professors and the assistant are available to students by email or videoconference to answer all questions relating to the subjects taught.
Assessment subjects
The content of evaluation is identical to the one intitally planned.
Assessment methods
Due to the confinment measures taken by the Belgian government and taking into account the recommendations of our institution and our faculty, the evaluation methods during the first session of May-June are modified as follows: - The written exam in person is replaced by a written exam to be carried out at home with surveillance by videoconference and an oral exam by videoconference; - The written examination at home will relate to the parts of the course taught by Mr. Mihaylov while the oral examination will relate to the other parts of the course; - As for the written exam initially planned, a list of questions will be sent to students before the exam - the questions asked during the exam will be part of this list; - This examination will be carried out during the May-June examination session, respecting the faculty calendar, i.e. May 29, 2020; - The use of electronic tools will not be authorized during the exam except a calculator and a computer exclusively used to access the videoconference; - At the end of the written exam, a PDF copy of your answers should be sent to Mr. Mihaylov within a limited time. The tool for making this PDF copy using a smartphone will be specified. You are advised to test this tool before the exam; - During the oral exam, the students will pass successively with Mr. Franssen and Mr. Demonceau; - During the oral exam, it is forbidden to use any recording tool for the exam. More details on the practical details of the examination will be communicated in due time. If the containment measures were to be maintained until the organization of the second session, the same methods of examination would be adopted.

- During the oral exam, the students will pass successively with Mr. Franssen, Mr. Mihaylov and Mr. Demonceau;
- the questions asked during the exam will be part of this list sent for the first session exam;
- This examination will be carried out during the August-September examination session, respecting the faculty calendar;
- The use of electronic tools will not be authorized during the exam except a computer exclusively used to access the videoconference;
- During the oral exam, it is forbidden to use any recording tool for the exam.
More details on the practical details of the examination will be communicated in due time.
