Learning unit contents

After the description of the major items concerning the design of bridges, the final aim of the course is to realise a bridge project from the preliminary design to the The aim of the course is to realise a predesign of one bridge on the basis of technical requirements. The pre-design will define the typology, the static schema and the main dimensions of the structure. IT will be necessary to pre-design the structure and its main elements by using the theoritical courses in the field of steel structures and/or concrete ones and of the Eurocodes. The students will be guided by teachers and/or engineers from engineering officeeachers and/or engineers from engineering office.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The course is divided in two parts:
- a course to describe the design of bridges presentation of the different types of bridges, their static schema, the advantages and disadvantages of each one, the equipment to define, the different possible construction methods, the loading to consider. The course present the state of the art by describing many existing bridges (4 x 4 h 00)
- the realization of a bridge pre-design  on the basis of technical requirements
During the course, the students will work in small groups, on the project which has been defined in the presence and with the help of teachers, assistants or professional engineers. It is expected from them to, based on a specification that will be presented, realise the project of a bridge through the following steps: - Completion of a pre-design: type of bridge, static schema, main dimensions - Project: definition of the main internal forces, design of the main sections, bearings, piers, foundations. For the pre-design, it will be necessary to define the typology of the bridge on basis of exchanges, discussions concerning the road accesses, the relief, the integration in the environment. Several solutions will presented, pre-designed by simple calculations and drawn by hand with the good scale. (2 x 4 hours). After, the pre-design will consist of designing the bridge to detail level that allow to establish a bill of quantities and possibly an estimate of the cost of the bridge. Quantities should be defined and a construction method proposed. The design involves the drafting of a calculation report with: - Assumptions (geometry, materials and loads) - The calculation of forces in the structure - Determination of the forces and displacements at supports and expansion joints - Design of sections (steel or concrete according to the chosen option) - The study of the transverse behaviour - The proposed construction method (2 sessions of 4 hours) Students have to use documents whose references will be made available. All computer calculated results will be validated by a manual calculation approach. The project will be presented in a summary report containing the conclusions of each chapter. The detailed calculations are given in the Annexes.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Knowledge of solids mechanics and structural mechanics.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teachers explain the principle of the design at the begining of each course

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

face to face

Recommended or required readings

Assessment methods and criteria

The reports will receive a cotation. The examination will be an oral presentation of a theoretical question about 'the design of bridge. After that, a discussion based on a photography of one existing bridge: description of the typology, type of material, possible construction method, ...
