Learning unit contents

The objective of the seminar of cartography of socio-technical controversies is to give the possibility to students of a Master degree at the ULg to approach in a new way some of their objects of studies: not just by assimilating contents of already stabilized scientific knowledge, but by the means of an exploratory work of contempory scientific or technological controversies and their social, political and economical consequences. The approach will be centered on scientific or technological "objects" but will aim at revealing - through the follow-up of their design, their use or their contestation - the effects on societies.
Examples: Which place the rifle TASER should have for the police's practices ? How Bisphenol A did become dangerous? How to reform the banking system? Should the prisons be dismantled? Is the Schale gas a new eldorado?

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The originality of the seminar lies in its critical exploitation of the web resources and tools. With the advent of the "information society", the provision of heterogeneous knowledge via Internet is in continual expansion. These new resources contribute to the reinforcement of the implication of the public in the life of the Web. From this point of view are born from new competences arise, whose training is integrated still little into the traditional university cursus: the capacity to produce state of references - with critical exploration of the web - of controversial problematics for which doesn't exist straightforwards diagnosis, or well known solutions.
At the end of the seminar, students are expected to organise and present in a coherent and critical way divergent knowledges and their consequences.
