Learning unit contents

This course is the continuation of ELEC0014. It is devoted to computational methods for the analysis of electric power systems of any size in steady-state conditions, in the presence of faults, in balanced and unbalanced operating conditions, respectively. Emphasis is on "system" approaches initiated in the course ELEC0014. 
The covered material includes :

  • synchronous machine: detailed Park model
  • electromagnetic transients in the synchronous machine
  • the power flow computation, numerical aspects, sensitivity analyses
  • static security analysis: determination of post-disturbance operating points
  • linear analysis based on nodal admittance matrix
  • analysis of balanced faults, short-circuit currents
  • analysis of unbalanced conditions: direct, negative and zero sequence components, three-phase analysis, case studies
  • introduction to power system protections.
The last topic is taught by Dr Cédric MOORS from ELIA Engineering, who brings his industrial expertise in the course.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will understand and will be able to use computational methods pertaining to steady state operation and in the presence of faults. Those methods are typically implemented in power system analysis software used by industry, that the student will be able to use with discernment.
He/she will be familiar also with fundamentals of power system protections.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Most of the material taught in course ELEC0014 must be known to start this course.
Basic knowledge and practice of MATLAB is also required.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The theory is taught and exercises are solved without devoting separate time slots to these two activities. On the contrary, exercises are inserted in the theoretical course in order to illustrate or extend the latter. When solving the exercises, interaction with the students is solicited.
A substantial homework (project) has to be performed by groups of two students. It involves various questions relative to a power system with enough complexity, whose data are provided. Those questions cover a large part of the material of courses ELEC0014 and ELEC0029 . The ARTERE software is distributed to the students. Some questions require to develop scripts in MATLAB language.

Recommended or required readings

For some sections, detailed lecture notes are available in French and can be downloaded from the Web page of the lecturer (see below). The student with insufficient knowledge of French should contact the lecturer as soon as possible; he/she will be recommended specific chapters in one or two textbooks in English.

Assessment methods and criteria

A few small homeworks during the course, to be shortly presented in front of the class.
A project by group of two students (outlined above).
Oral examination : clarification / discussion on specific points of the whole report.
For the second-chance examination, the project has to be performed by each student individually.

Organizational remarks

The course is taught during the second quadrimester, one half-day per week. Time will be left to perform the homework (project) in the last part of the quadrimester.

The evaluation is unchanged; it will be based on the project reports.
The oral examination, which will consists in a discussion of the reports, will be organized by teleconference instead of face-to-face.

Examination : June 10, 2020.
