Learning unit contents

As final requirement of the Bachelor's degree, Political Science students have to write a final paper on a topic to be approved by the professor. This essay must not imply an original research but rather it is the synthesis of what has been written on the topic in order to confirm an hypothisis or to anwer to a research issue defined by the student. A significant bibliographical research - to be used in the paper - is therefore required. The students are asked to offer an original argument by the comparison of several sources as well as to show critical insight and the ability to synthesize.

Student has already followed an introductory course on the methodology in social sciences

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Throughout the year, the students and the professor will meet in order to discuss their work. The final draft will be read by the professor as well as a reader knowledgeable on the topic.
A specific course for scientifique bibliogrpahic search will be organised with  bibliothèse Graulich

Assessment methods and criteria

The guidelines for the Directed paper are as follow:

  • the length of the paper is 25 pages and has to follow several criteria (which will be given by the professor at the beginning of the year)
  • the final grade will be given by the professor and a reader
  • the evaluation criteria are : quality of the writing, of the bibliography, of the mobilised arguments, of the structure of the document, of the adequacy between the introduction / conclusion.

Organizational remarks

The Directed paper is based on the interaction between the student, his/her fellow students, and the professor.
Penalties may be imposed if the students do not follow the procedure and the criteria. The thematic and the reader have to be defined on paper before 14 novembre 2019- 15h
Before decembre 17 2019 - 3 pm-  students send to catherine.fallon@ulg.ac.be a electronic document with the research question, a list of 10 references related to it and a one page text presenting the problematic
the final work document must be given to the Secretary:

the deadline is 30/4/2020 (3pm) for the first session and 18/8/2020 (3pm) for the second session If the paper is not distributed by the dates imposed, the student is considered as "ajourné"

For the TDSP delivery :
- there is NO paper delivery - there is a sending of WORD + PDF files (2 formats please) to V. Bigaré, C. Fallon and your promoter: the sending date remains fixed at April 30 at 3 p.m. ( so that you are relaxed during the celebration May 1 :)) but to avoid too much stress in this confinement period, all work sent for May 8 will be taken into account, exceptionally. - For the evaluation of your work, I will contact your promoter: we will send you before June 30 by email our evaluation of your work as well as specific comments in the text that you have sent us! - in case of failure: the email will also include the major changes to be made to file it for the August 2020 session. It will be possible to also plan a face-to-face discussion with me or your promoter.
