Learning unit contents
During academic year 2019-2020 the course will be delivered in English.
The course starts with a series of lectures outlining the institutional framework of the various legal orders which will be analysed all along the semester (the European Union, the International Labour Organisation and the Council of Europe).
The second and main part of the course deals with selected topics, such as: migrant workers, atypical work, non-discrimination, collective labour law, crisis and social rights. These topics will be addressed through a transversal approach, by highlighting the role and contribution of each of the abovementioned legal orders, as well as their eventual conflicts.
In the analysis of these topics, specific attention will be paid to the decisions of the various monitoring bodies (Court of justice of the EU, European Court of Human Rights, European Committee of Social Rights, Committee of Experts for the Application of Conventions and Recommendations).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
By the end of the course, the student is able to:
- identify the main challenges in the field of the labour law of the European Union, as well as of international labour law (International Labour Organisation, Council of Europe);
- identify, find and understand the legal sources which are relevant for each of these legal orders;
- situate the decisions of the monitoring bodies in the context of each legal order and to critically analyse these decisions.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
General knowledge of national Labour law and of EU law.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures with students participation, whether individual or by group. During the lectures relevant decisions of the various monitoring bodies (Court of Justice, European Court of Human Rights, European Committee of Social Rights...) will be analysed and discussed collectively. The course also requires autonomous work by students between the lectures in order to prepare the discussion.

Distance learning (videos) and personal work (individual or in groups) on the weeks where there is no face to face lectures

Supporting documents (slides, readings, sources, decisions, scientific contributions) will be made available to the students through eCampus.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam with preparation. Practical aspects will be discussed with the students.
The exam will be in English.
For the preparation of the exam, students can use the sources made available through eCampus, without personal annotations and/or post-it (highlighting and underlining is allowed).

Videos and slides of lectures are available on eCampus, as well as legislative texts and case law.
Assessment subjects
The exam will cover all the topics included in the lectures. After the last lecture, each student will be randomly allocated a specific topic to cover in greater detail.
Assessment methods
Oral exam with preparation. The oral part of the exam will take place through teleconferencing means, to be decided together with the students.
The exam will consist of two parts. In the first part, students will be asked to analyse and present a single decision dealing with the topic that has been attributed to them. They will receive the decision in advance, one hour before the exam. In the second part, students will answer questions concerning a different topic covered by the classes.
