Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
This course is devoted to the study of the principal techniques used to search for mathematical documentation (use of encyclopaedias, of search engines, of bibliographical databases, of catalogs of libraries) and to a training to the writing and the encoding in LaTeX of mathematical texts and their bibliographies. We will emphasize how to cite references in order to avoid plagiarism.
Part 2: Integrated project
Introduction to research in mathematics through the study of a (portion of a) mathematical article / book chapter published in English.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
At the end of the course, the students should be able to find by themselves a list of references on a specific mathematical subject and to quickly locate the works quoted in this list in paper or electronic form. They should also be able to write mathematical texts and bibliographies.
Part 2: Integrated project
At the end of the course the student will have worked alone to understand the article/part of article/book chapter. His/her understanding of the results will be sufficient for the student to present them in a convincing way during a 40 minute oral presentation.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Part 2: Integrated project
Prerequisite
MATH0482-3 - Probabilité et statistique
MATH0248-1 - Géométrie
Corequisite
MATH0499-1 - Théorie des graphes
MATH0246-2 - Structures algébriques
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
The theoretical part of the course is teached by means of Powerpoint presentations. During the exercises sessions, the students are trained to search for documentation and to localize books in the library. They are also trained to write and encode in LaTeX mathematical texts and bibliographic notices.
Part 2: Integrated project
A list of topics (each containing a bibliographic reference as well as a short description) will be made available at the beginning of the academic year. Each topic will be presented by a promoter.
The mathematical difficulty of the topics will be taylored so as to ensure that 3d year students of the bachelors in maths at ULiège will be able to read them. A topic can either be devoted to an entire article / book chapter or only to a portion that the promoter believes to be of sufficient interest.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
Face-to-face course
Part 2: Integrated project
The student will have to work independently but may take regular appointments with his promoter in order to discuss his potential mathematical difficulties.
Recommended or required readings
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
Lecture notes will be distributed to the students during the course.
Assessment methods and criteria
Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication
A written examination on the matter of the course will take place during the session.
Part 2: Integrated project
Evaluation of the students achievements will be based on an oral presentation ofthe chosen topic in French or in English. This will be accompagnied by a written version encoded in LaTeX.
The presentation will last approximately 40 minutes. It will be performed in front of the coordinators and the promoter and any exterior person who may wish to attend. If the need arises, the student may use exterior elements (projections, softwares, artefacts) for illustrative purposes. The student must combine the use of beamer and the blackboard. In particular, the presentation will include a proof without notes on the blackboard.
The LaTeX document presents the studied subject in a few pages and include a bibliography in BibTeX.
The grade will be attributed by the coordinators and the promoter. The final grade will be attributed in equal parts with respect to the January exam of partim 1, the oral presentation and the LaTeX document.

Part 2: Integrated project
The oral presentation of the project is cancelled.
The document to be written in LaTeX must be submitted by May 18.
