Learning unit contents

Introduction course to Audiovisual Techniques : shooting, sound, editing (Adobe Premiere Pro), sound mixing and color grading (Da Vinci Resolve).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this class is to grasp the fondamental notions of audiovisual techniques in nowaday's digital environment in order to master its tools. This mastering will enable you to complete successfully the audiovisual works offered in Masters and will also help you being quickly operational during your internships.
By acquiring this technical culture, the class will allow you to become informed and autonomous interlocutors with the professionnals of the audiovisual world : directors, producers, sound engineers and also postproduction specialists. You will be able to defend the meaning and the content of any audiovisual project, to partake in the decisions and the manoeuvres, while grasping better the whole technical field, its rules, its limits and its actors.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Making a "remake" of a cinema sequence (2 to 4 minutes) in groups of three students (a director, a cameraman and a sound recorder).

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

The course is composed of 12 sessions of 2h30, every Wednesday from 9:30 to 12AM, at Salle Lumière.

Recommended or required readings

For those who would like to study deeper some aspects of the audiovisual techniques, a bibliography is downloadable at the bottom of this page.

Assessment methods and criteria

The course evaluation is divided in a practical part and a theorical part.
The practical part is the achievement of the remake, exported as .mp4 and delivered on a memory stick. The remake will be supported by a folder gathering all the documents that have been necessary (shooting script, casting ads, casting sheets, scouting sheets, call sheets, storyboard, etc.) and a feedback analysis on the experience.
The theorical part is a written exam which aims to verify the understanding of the basic audiovisual techniques.
In case of failure of one the part, the quote of the successful part can be kept until the complete success of the course.

Work placement(s)

Organizational remarks

The audiovisual material and the editing equipment are borrowed at the LICAM, where the teacher will assist the students with the whole postproduction (editing, color correction, exportation).
A reference is attributed to each group. This reference must be provided at every step of the work : reservation of the cameras, reservation of the editing equipment, organisation of the digital files, identification of all the documents.
Two important rules about the LICAM :

  • It is mandatory to make a reservation at least 24h before withdrawal. A withdrawal without notice will not guarantee the availability of the materiel nor its state (charged batteries, full kits).
  • The backup of the recordings must be completed before the time of restitution. The students are responsible for their own files.
