Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Imagined as a dialogue between two artistic practices, but also two cultural fields strongly determined by their industrial development, this course considers the links between literature and cinema under the questions of genres and intermediality.
The course will approach historically, aesthetically and sociologically the evolution of the genres.
Romans-feuilletons and serials, detective novels and films noirs, fantastic literature and horror pictures, graphic novels and blockbusters from comics, spy novels and political thrillers, erotic literature and pornographic films are some examples of subjects which could be discussed.
This year, part of the course will be very specifically devoted to Marvel productions (publishing and studios).

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • To introduce students to para-literary and cinematographic genres (popular novels, fantastic literature, crime novels, science-fiction, songs, romantic novels, etc.).
  • To understand and explicate in a historical and sociological manner the emergence of the genres in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Enable students to formulate problems within these genres.

Organizational remarks
