Learning unit contents

Introduction to the basic concepts of atomic and molecular spectroscopy
1. General concepts
2. Atomic spectroscopy (UV-Visible and X-Rays)
3. Infrared and Raman vibrational spectroscopies
4. Electronic spectroscopy

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the students should have reached an understanding of the spectroscopic concepts which allows them to follow easily more advanced application-oriented courses.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Good understanding of general physics courses (1st and 2nd bachelor years)

5 two-hour lectures favouring the active participation of the students

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

80 % of the course could be delivered face-to-face before the confinement. The end of chapter 3 and chapter 4 have been taught via an audio-powerpoint presentation (podcast). A détailed text has also been made available on MyULiège.

Assessment subjects

The material remains unchanged: chapters 1 to 4, according to the information given during the 1st lecture (file: Notions à connaître_Spectro_BAC2 Géologie 2020). The oral examination will, however, take place under open book conditions.

Assessment methods

Open book oral examination by video-conferencing (Lifesize or Blackboard Collaborate): a link will be provided to each student.
2 questions with a short period of reflection not exceeding 20% of the overall duration of the examination
Duration: 40 minutes maximum per student, according to a schedule (to be prepared). The camera of the student will have to be switched on during the examination.
