Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

This course is taught in English, as part of the Amis and FAME+ Masters.
Since this course is an optional course taught to a usually small number of students, there is some latitude in defining its content, for example by taking into account topics of interest for the future master thesis, etc.
The course usually consists in the analysis and discussion of experimental papers from the recent literature, reporting on the synthesis of inorganic materials. Because of the different backgrounds of students, the course usually starts with a few more conventional lectures. Depending on student interest, the course may be illustrated by a short lab project focused on materials synthesis and/or powder X-ray diffraction.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the students will be able

  • to discuss and propose experimental procedures for synthesis of inorganic materials by common methods
  • to use their background knowledge to develop further knowledge by reading review papers

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

introductory courses in experimental inorganic and solid state chemistry

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

  • theoretical lectures
  • analysis of literature papers
  • (possibly) short lab project

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

part face-to-face lectures and discussion, part work at home (required reading,...)
+ (possibly) short lab project

Recommended or required readings

a copy of powerpoint slides is available

Assessment methods and criteria

presentations during the course + final exam
If a short lab project is included, its assessment will be taken into account in the final mark.
