Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Introduction: general concepts of anatomy and physiology
General morphology of an animal, identification of the various regions and their osseous support, in particular the limbs, basic anatomical vocabulary
General description of the digestive and uro-genital systems (including mamary gland) including the specificities of the three categories of studied animals: monogastric (pig), polygastric (ruminants) and poultry.
Cellular and tissue organization of different physiological systems.

Description of different physiological systems: respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, renal and reproductive physiology, communication (endocrine and nervous system), physiology of growth, immune system

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of this course is to describe for the main animals used in husbandry (ruminant, monogastric and poultry) the anatomy and the physiology of the biological functions.
After completing the course the student is expected to to describe the general morphology, to realize plans, to understand and to explain how the main physiological mechanismes function, taking into account the anatomic aspects. He must have understood the relation between the structure and the function.
This course contributes to the acquisition of the following skills:

  • Identify relevant qualitative and quantitative information related to an agronomic process
  • Interpreting information related to an agronimic process in order to identify the main elements
  • Identify limiting parameters of a process or a system

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

basic knowledge on zoology and animal biology

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The majority of the courses will be given in amphitheater; the anatomy will be seen before the physiology of the studied systems.Ten hours are foreseen on anatomy, while 28 hours are dedicated on the theoretical part of physiology.
Illustrative movies will be realized, the students will have to view them; this will replace a part of the lessons in amphitheater and/or practical class.
Four practical sessions on physiology are organized. The presence of the students at these practical sessions is mandatory. The students are evaluated on this part by an examination during the last practical session.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Lectures : 38h (10h anatomy + 28h physiology) Practical Works : 10h

Recommended or required readings

'Physiologie animale' Sherwood, Klandorf, Yancey, De Boeck Supérieur
'Physiology of domestic animals' of Sjaastad, Sand Hove.
'Anatomy and Physiology of domestic animals' of R. Michael Akers & D. Michael Denbow
'Physiologie animale' of Hilber P.
The power points of anatomy, support of the lessons, will be available on myulg "supports du cours" and/or e-campus. They contain all the informations necessary to pass the examination.
The powerpoints of physiology will be available on myulg "supports du cours" and/or e-campus. A syllabus is foreseen as supplementary support for the students.

Assessment methods and criteria

The evaluation on the practical session accounts for 15% of the final note and will be evaluated by a written examination during the last session of the practical sessions.
The exam on the theoretical part accounts thus for 85% and will be done in two phases: in the first phase, the students will have a MCQ exam on the part of anatomy and physiology. In the second part, the part of anatomy is a written exam, while the part of physiology consists of an oral exam with written prepration.Only when the student obtains 6/10, he can defend orally the part of physiology. If the student obtains less than 6/10 for the MCQ, the exam of physiology is only a written exam.
The final note will thus be calculated as follows:
15% evaluation of the practical sessions, during the last session of the practical sessions
10% MCQ
20% written exam of anatomy
55% oral exam of physiology

During the second sesion, the two parts (anatomy and physiology) will be evaulated by a written exam.
There is no partial exemption for this course on the parts of anatomy and physiology.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session

Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning

Physiology:
The following chapters were taught face-to-face:

  • Introduction
  • Muscle and bone physiology
  • The nervous system
  • The endocrine system
  • the defence system
  • The cardiovascular system (except vessels)
The following chapters were taught remotely (podcast or powerpoint commented)

  • The cardiovascular system: the vessels (podcast via MyUliège)
  • The respiratory system (podcast via MyUliège)
  • The excretory system (on ecampus, voice recording on the powerpoint)
  • The digestive system (on ecampus, voice recording on the powerpoint)
  • The reproductive system (will be on ecampus, voice recording on the powerpoint): this chapter will be shortened
TP:

  • TP1 was given face-to-face
  • TP2, TP3, TP4: distance learning: videos and voice recording on the powerpoint
Anatomy:
All sessions were given by podcast (MyUliège).

Assessment subjects

Physiology: Introduction- Muscle physiology and bones- Nervous system - Endocrine system - Defence system - Cardiovascular system - Respiratory system - excretory system - digestive system - reproductive system (shortened)
TP: the 4 TPs
Anatomy: General morphology of an animal, identification of the different regions of the body and their bone support, in particular of the limbs. General description of the digestive and urogenital systems (including the mammary gland) of production animals (pigs, ruminants)
The diagrams to know well will be communicated via ecampus.

Assessment methods

For physiology and practicals:
Exam by multiple choice questions for each series with the possibility of then presenting an oral exam for the physiology part via Collaborate. The oral examination will only be possible for students who have obtained a minimum of 8/20 at the MCQ and will be carried out directly after the MCQ examination. The precise procedures for carrying out the exams are available on eCampus.
For anatomy:
Multiple choice examination for each series. Questions may relate to the schemes made during the course.

The overall score is then composed:
80% evaluation of practicals and physiology
20% anatomy.

Students who have already passed the part of the TPs last year will not be examinated during the QCM about the TPs. Their TP score will be incorporated into the final grade calculations.
