Learning unit contents
The master thesis is a substantial individual project that can also be realized in (collaboration with) a private company, in Belgium or abroad. We generally consider that it amounts to 4 months of full time work. The subject must be proposed or approved by an advisor who must be an academic member or a permanent researcher.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of the master thesis is to prepare the student to his/her future career in a private company. The student will have to prove that (s)he can carry out a substantial project based of the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills acquired during his/her studies. This project will almost always include a preliminary study, some substantial development, and a final discussion of the results.

It is advised to choose the optional courses that will help achieve the thesis objectives.

A student can also make a proposal, but it must be approved by an advisor. Students should choose a subject as early as possible, ideally at the end of the previous academic year, to increase the chances to finish by the deadline. The council of computer science studies will make sure that all students have a subject and will also check the composition of the jury. The student will keep his/her advisor informed of his/her progress on a regular basis.
The student must fill the required information once his/her subject is chosen on the MATHEO platform, and to upload his/her final work within the requested deadlines.

Assessment methods and criteria
The final grade will be the result of three factors:
- A note on the content given by the various members of the committee (to which a copy of the document was provided). The assessment of each member will include a commentary on the work (15-20 lines) and a note taking into account both the form and content. A grid is provided for this purpose (see file "Note_de_fond.pdf") .The average of the scores given by the members of the reading committee will be 50% of the final grade.
- A note which sanctions the oral defense given by the jury members present at the oral defense as well as by the president of the jury. A grid is provided for this purpose (see file "Note_defense_orale.pdf"). The average of the scores given by the members present the jury will equal 30% of the final grade.
- A note on the "professional" integration, assigned by the person responsible of the daily supervision of the student. An evaluation grid is provided for this purpose (see file "Note_integration_professionnelle.pdf". The mark awarded will correspond to 20% of the final grade.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
In the case of master thesis work involving the collection, by the student, of data in the laboratory or on site, alternative devices, compatible with the COVID19 constraints will be considered (use of other external data, theoretical developments, literature review, alternative numerical study, etc.). The objectives of the work will be adapted accordingly by the academic promoter.

Assessment methods
The evaluation will be based on a written report and an oral defence (consisting of an oral presentation followed by a question and answer session).
The modalities and deadlines for the submission of the written report remain unchanged.
The oral defence will be organised remotely by videoconference.
