Materials 1A

The exploration of the world of building materials is developing in the first quadrimester.
The course offers students to discover, from photographic reports, the possible use of various architectural materials. A classification of materials through the material rather than through the function allows the student to become aware of the link between the choice of a material (become material) and the impact on the environment.
The material is replaced in the context of industrial production but also as a particular piece of handcraft.
The student can then broaden his vision of the material beyond standard products.
A session will be devoted to a practical work allowing to approach physically the materials, to appreciate the application of the knowledge acquired during the theoretical course.

Structure 1A

The course "Structure 1" is directly oriented towards architectural training ; the architect is seen as a designer integrating the structural dimension into his approach to the project.  
The course focuses on the fundamental principles of structural analysis (top-down approach) in preparation for the "Structure 2" course offered in the second quadrimester where compositional aspects will be further discussed (bottom-up approach).
It consists of an introduction : - to the links between architectural and structural designs ; - to the principles of elementary equilibria of forces and stresses and their evaluation principaly through graphic resolution ; - to fundamental structural elements.
The course is split between theory classes and the resolution of exercises.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Materials 1A

Theoretical courses illustrated by a photographic report of application of different building materials. Practical workshop exploring the characteristics of one or two materials provided by the student.

Construction 1A

the general objective of the activity of learning " Construction 1 " is to present to the student a frame of welcome and of inititiation to the technologies of the construction applied to the development of a project of architecture.

Structure 1A

Students should be able to identify surface, linear and point loads based on density of materials in a simple structure such as a floor, wall, column, beam or foundation slab.
Students should be able to identify the supporting reactions through the graphic or analytical balance of current isostatic systems and to deduce the behaviour of the whole from this.
They should also be able to express the structural properties of simple frameworks and their contribution to the relations between materiality, construction and architecture.

Le cours d'introduction à l'utilisation des géodonnées appliquées à l'architecture travaille les compétences suivantes du référentiel facultaire :

Au terme du cours, l'étudiant devra être capable de :




  • Comprendre, classer, comparer les principes de la représentation cartographique
  • Parler de la logique de changement d'échelle
  • Comprendre et exécuter un positionnement spatial dans un système de coordonnées planes
  • Comprendre le principe du positionnement GPS-GNSS
  • Comprendre le principe de la symbolisation cartographique.
  • Faire le lien entre la symbolique représentée sur le plan/carte et le concept qu'il représente.
  • Comprendre et appliquer la représentation spatiale symbolique (lignes-points-polygones) à des entités spatiales
  • Classer les éléments du territoire en fonction de critères sémantiques
  • Comprendre et reproduire une affectation de sol
  • Comprendre et appliquer le principe de la superficie
  • Comprendre et appliquer la notion de Métadonnées
  • Analyser une situation, un contexte d'intervention pour définir quelles données sont les plus adéquates à concevoir une représentation pertinente du lieu.
  • Comprendre le principe de l'altimétrie
  • Comprendre le principe de la représentation par courbe de niveau
  • Se rappeler, comprendre et appliquer un algorithme de construction de courbe de niveau
  • Analyser un terrain sur base d'une représentation altimétrique courbes de niveau et en proposer une représentation en coupe
  • Comprendre la notion de représentation en RASTER
  • Différencier les représentations de MNT, MNS, MNH
  • Comparer, Comprendre, Inférer le lien entre les données planimétrique et altimétriques pour concevoir une représentation 3D.
  • Évaluer, Vérifier, Critiquer une représentation 3D pour vérifier sa pertinence, et son adéquation avec les besoins.
  • Connaitre le moyen de retrouver l'information géospatiale en Belgique et en Europe
  • Être consciente de la valeur légale, de la propriété et du coût des données
  • Utiliser un outil cartographique online pour produire une représentation.
  • Réaliser un relevé simple sur base d'un instrument de mesure de distances
  • COmprendre les principes de base du relevé
  • Connaitre la différence entre la précision et l'exactitude
