Learning unit contents
The general chronology of 19th century history doesn't always succeed in giving a balanced interpretation of its architectural history. Specialised studies, in particular, oscillate between tracing the genealogy and the roots of modern architecture, and disregard for the contribution of the 19th century to the overall development of contemporary architecture.
The aim of this course is to provide the essential instruments needed to analyse the main themes characterising 19th century architecture. Special attention will be paid to aspects relating to the notion of industrial, cultural and technical progress. We shall also examine how this century has marked the birth of cultural globalisation, modern industrial development and the specialisation of scientific fields.
