Learning unit contents
Reminder of the basics of the mechanics of resistance, stresses and constraints, the impact of form, intuitive approaches, modifications to external or internal conditions over time. Stone and brickwork, mortars Iron, cast iron and steel, as a means of strengthening stonework and as constructive elements of the triangulated wooden frames of the 19th and 20th centuries. Main graphic methods of static calculation and the properties of different structural typologies. Wood constructions in springers, beams, purlins and triangulated frames, its strengths and weaknesses. Restoration methods and the conditions under which they can be applied.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course in ancient structures develops knowledge, investigative methods and analysis of the particularities of existing ancient structures, notably their development and proportions in ancient times according to conditions which were very different to those today. This initially requires knowledge of ancient materials and structures, how they are implemented and verified under current conditions. Students must be able to understand basic methods for analysing ancient structures, for determining the investigations required to understand the cause and effect of possible structural damage and the basic corrections to be recommended.

Course in structural analysis from Bac 1, Bac 2 and Bac 3. Course Arch1737-1 is an indispensable pre-requisite for Restauration Option
