AGAINST AND WITH ARCHITECTURE
Prior analysis of existing buildings.
The academic programme for the year will include:
*Presentations, working and discussion groups, plans and rapid practice.
*Guided visits to completed construction  projects
*Discussion seminars

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Course objective:
In preparation for workshop C, the objective of the attached course, in order to be able to formulate an appropriate response, is to construct a small architecture, that can be grafted and integrated into an already-existing cell, to provide the basis for analysis of a site and building from a historical, technical and formal point of view (plans, building structure, light exposure).
This mixed course varies in accordance with the relevant programmes and sketches the basis for analysis and reflection by stimulating the response to the relevant site.
The 2 ECTS courses, involving 24 hours of classes are divided into  sessions of two-hour classes (or block-delivered during one half-day) in the first term of the year and will include:
Section 1/ plans and technical specifications for the building to be studied (1 or 2 two-hour sessions); SERGE PAEME, 50% visits and 50% lectures.
Section 2/ historical analysis of the building concerned (2 or 3 two-hour sessions), analysis of the site, 100% lectures.
Section 3/ analysis of the construction system to be studied (2 or 3 two-hour sessions); JEAN MARIE BLEUS 24% visits and 75 % lectures.
Section 4/ analysis of natural light; shade (1 or 2 two-hour sessions); HENRIETTE MICHAUX 100% lectures.
Section 5/ positioning and implementation of a design process, to be defined according to the programme: 100% lectures.     
Section 6/Contact Urbanism-taxes; 100% lectures.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Prerequisites:
The content taught in the Bacs B1, B2 and B3 workshops will be: courses on construction and technology, history of art and architecture, topography and baccalaureate facilities.
Obligatory complementary course; co-requisites:
* Workshop ARCH 1623-1 WORKSHOP C STUDIO 1/1 is directly linked to this course covering the problem of intervention in existing buildings.
*The course ARCH 1637-1 COMPLEMENTARY WORKSHOP INFORMATION is directly linked to the workshop and supplies the complementary information to the programme developed over the course of the year, in the form of visits and interventions by lecturers presenting their specific studies and personal experiences on the subject covered.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Organization:
1st term
Based on a programme delivered in the workshop, there will be academic activities in the form of classes, presentations, lectures and visits to sites.
The course will include planning work, and documentation involving a practical application exercise in the given subject for analysis, in direct association with the chosen site.

There is no set syllabus or bibliography.
*Personal notes are to be taken by the student. The aim of this is to ensure the practical application of the project developed.

Assessment methods and criteria

Assessment:
Presence in the workshop and at presentations is obligatory in order to ensure continuous assessment of the student:
A file will have to be completed on the visits to the workshop to be agreed with the respective lecturers.
The assessment criteria are:
Final quality of the synthesis of all the data, the idea, the formal composition, technical perfection and communication. *Assessment will be made by lecturers accompanied by specific resource personnel or the project addressees.  The student gives an oral presentation of his or her work, based on graphic material and models or files which he or she has completed, and also in the form of written papers on the subject covered, to be included in the presentation paper for the final project making it possible to assess how the data presented is integrated.
