Learning unit contents
Construction 2B
This course falls within the three year Bachelor's CONSTRUCTION course.
Over the three years, the course addresses general and traditional techniques relating to the construction of simple buildings - from the ground to the roof, including finishings -, providing a basic understanding of subjects, materials, production and implementation methods relating to the various stages and aspects of building construction following the following internal curriculum :
B1 : FROM THE GROUND TO THE ROOF : observations, reasoning and principles
B2 : CONSTRUCTING THE EXTERNAL ENVELOPE : analyses, connections and details
B3 : INSIDE THE ENVELOPE : partitions, junctions and finishings
The lesson's program of the second CONSTRUCTION course includes :
- the study of complex 'vertical' walls delimiting the built volume ;
- the study of complex 'horizontal and oblique' partitions delimiting the built volume.
Materials, systems and complex structures are analysed from the perspective of their evolution over time, their hygrothermic nature, in a theoretical manner and through detailed examples, particularly in terms of introducing materials and/or walls.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Construction 2B
By the end of the year, students should be able to demonstrate, independently of their basic knowledge of subjects, materials, production and implementation methods relating to the various stages of building construction, that they are capable, in relation to the subject taught, of :
Ø understanding and thus analysing a complex construction
Ø imagining and thus reasoning and constructing
Ø communicating and thus clarifying and summarising through drawing and writing
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Construction 2B
- knowledge of the principles taught in the 1st construction cursus and the ability to undertake technical reasoning ;
- knowledge and mastery of architectural drawing conventions.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Construction 2B
Lectures illustrated by slide shows and short application exercises.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Construction 2B
Face-to-face
Recommended or required readings
Construction 2B
Slides are downloadable on MyUlg.
Assessment methods and criteria
Attention, the success of the modular teaching unit is only guaranteed if each of the teaching subunits is successful.
In all other cases, the jury will be sovereign. If a teaching subunit fails, the modular unit is failed without calculating the average.
If each subunit of instruction is successful, the average of the unit of instruction will be based on a weighting respecting the hourly volume of each subunit.
The grade of each successful subunit of teaching will be reported from one session to another within the same academic year
Construction 2B
Written exam on theory and exercises, without notes and syllabus.

Adaptation of teaching commitments following the COVID-19 pandemic for the May-June 2020 session
Teaching methods implemented : distance-learning
Construction 2B
The slides were uploaded to my-uliege and the video lessons were uploaded to Unicast.
The whole will be brought together on e-campus to facilitate management via a single platform.
A discussion forum is open on e-campus to allow students to ask questions.
Comfort 2B
Slides with comments and accessible via myULiège.
Assessment subjects
Construction 2B
The topics relating to the evaluation corresponds to the topics which will be seen during the course until the end of the semester.
These topics will include the following chapters:
- The foundations
- The load-bearing vertical walls and facades
- The load-bearing horizontal floors and roofs
These topics will not include the following chapters:
- Relations between design and construction systems
- Prefabricated and modular construction systems
Structure 2B
see French
Comfort 2B
The evaluation refers to comfort and heat balance, energy consumption, heat and air losses.
Some parts of the Energie+ website (https://energieplus-lesite.be/) are the subject of the course material.
A document accessible on myULiège specifies these parts of the chapters that are the subject of the evaluation material, which are: "Evaluer, Théories, Calculs, Mesures, Données".
The chapters: "Améliorer, Concevoir et Techniques" are only indicative to better understand and illustrate the different constructive aspects related to the protected volume of the building and the ventilation strategies!
Assessment methods
Construction 2B
A report (Individual work) must be submitted no later than the day of the exam.
It must be uploaded in pdf on the e-campus platform.
It will contain a drawing of a section through one of the facades of the student's End-of-Year project and an analysis report of this facade based on the elements seen in the course.
The outline to follow for the realization of the report will be downloadable on e-campus.
There will therefore be no live remote oral or written assessment for this course.

The evaluation method consists of a synthesis work that uses as a support the project "La maison brulée" carried out in the first quadrimester of the architecture workshop course ARCH0241-2.
The work of synthesis consists in analyzing the project as presented to the final jury of the first quadrimester. It is not required to redraw the project or modify it graphically.
The analysis (written argumentation illustrated by diagrams) must deal with the notions of comfort, heat loss, solar gain, ventilation and heat balance, by applying various tools to assist in the design of the Energie+ site.
Students who have not carried out the burnt house project are invited to choose another small housing project carried out in one of their architecture project courses.
