Internal medicine of pets
Students are trained through clinical rounds, practical seminars (practical cases), realisation of clinical examinations and problem-based learning. Learning how to take a history and how to make a clinical examination will also be provided (on healthy dogs and clinical patients). Students wil have to visualize mulitmedia documents. They will join the last year students for consultations at the Small Animal clinic as well as in a first line community clinic.

Students are trained through clinical rounds/consultations and participation to wetlabs.

Teachig includes particpitation in clinical rounds, of patients hosptalized at the CVU.
Studnets will partciipate in reception of compaion animals emergencies, as well as hygiene care an monitoring of in patients.

Basic practical clinical course for all vet students on clinical examinations and diagnosis of main diseases of poultry, rabbits (production and pets) and rodents (pets).
This is a basic course for all vet students not a specialisation course
Course is partly based on watching films (commented by staff members or as a stand-alone viewing) describing post-mortem examinations (poultry, rabbit and pigeon) and specific clinical examination (birds, rabbits).
Then students mainly make necropsies and whenever possible clinical examinations of animal species described above either sent directly by owners or by veterinarians for specialized examinations .

The objectives of the clinical activities are:
- Get familiar with surgical procedures in basic soft tissue, oncologic surgery, and orthopedics in the dog and cat.
- Develop clinical judgement through participation to clinical rounds

At the end of this teaching unit programme, the student will be able to
- take a thorough history and complete clinical examination in dogs and cats
- understand and remember the concepts developed during practical seminars provided during the week
- make the transition between theoratical knowledge and real clinical cases
- get familiar with fluidotehrapy and procipels of stabilisation of a critical patient
- get familiar with biosecuroty rules and apply the hygiene rules applicable in the clinic, as well as in the hospitalisation and isolation units.

- to make a post-mortem examination of poultry, rabbit and pigeon and to apply these skills to other bird species
- to determine significant gross lesions
- to analyses clinical data and to make a differential diagnosis

- to establish an economic, sporting or zootechnical prognosis
- to settle preventive measures

Notions dedicated to birds, rabbits, and new companion animals that are developed during the theoretical courses from previous years (anatomy, physiology, propaedeutics, parasitology, bacteriology, virology, ...) are of the uppermost importance. A thorough knowledge of the courses " Pets Medicine" partim new companion animals (VETE2077-1) and "Monogastric animal health management, partim poultry (VETE2083-1) is mandatory.

The acquisition of basic soft tissue surgery techniques (opening / closing of the abdominal cavity, cystotomy, gastrostomy, gastropexy) will be done on dead dogs, under the supervision of a supervisor.

Pets surgery
On Mon from 8:30 till 9:00, a written evaluation will take place. Then, students will perform the techniques of temporary tracheotomy, chest tube placement, and digit amputation, under the supervision of a collaborator, on dog cadavers.
On Tuesday from 9:00 till 12:00, the students participate to consultations
On Wednesday, the students participate to soft tissue surgery clinical rounds.
On Thurs. from 8.30 till 12.00, students will perform techniques of reconstructive surgery and mammary tumor excision, under the supervision of a collaborator, on dog cadavers.
On Friday from 8.30 till 12.00, students will perform the techniques of medullary pinning, under the supervision of a collaborator, on dog cadavers.

The evaluation of the student's performance during the clinic will be based on the written tests and his/her participation in the clinics.
Any unjustified absence during the week of clinical course will mean a general mark of 0/20 for the subject:"Small Animal Clinic" regardless the marks obtained in the other constitutive topics.
Examination in september will be similar to that of june. However, if number of students allow students would be informed on the day of 1st session results that an oral exam might be replacing the originally planned written exam.

Continuous evaluation by the staff during the week and possibility of test at the end of the week. This mark account for 1/6 of the final mark for the clinic of small animals. Unjustified absence will lead to a "A" (absence) mark for the course whatever were the marks in the other courses Students in September retakes will have to spend a week in the clinic at a moment determined by the incumbent (Prof. Dr D. Marlier), possibly during holiday. During this week, the staff will continuously evaluate them. During medical consultation or visit of farms and/or bird and small mammals rehabilitation centres students must have an irreproachable attitude and behaviour. Failure to respect these indications is enough to get a serious insufficiency (7/20) as final note.

The attendence at the clinic is compulsory. Absences have to be justified by phone at the service and confirmed by an official certificate. Making up of all the absences is compulsory at a moment determined by the incumbent, possibly during holiday.
The unjustified absences will be taken into account as explained above.
Administrative rules that must be read before arrival at the the clinic are available on the CVU website. Biosecurity rules must be known before arrival at the clinic.
