Learning unit contents

  • Translation of general interest texts presenting different levels of language registers and covering various subjects.
  • Deepening knowledge of contrastive linguistics.
  • Development of various translation difficulties and rendering the correct styles and register of the source text. Reflexive approach to translation mechanisms and techniques.
  • Introduction of the concept of terminology and its application through translation of texts in specific fields
  • Development of French writing skills.
  • Introduction to sight translation.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this course, the student will be able to translate general interest texts, analyse them, convey them and rephrase the meaning. Students will also be able to comment on translation difficulties and justify their choices. Students will be capable of using basic translation tools (monolingual and bilingual dictionaries) as well as carrying out research using specialised dictionaries or IT tools (Internet). Students should successfully complete their translation taking account of the linguistic and stylistic particularities of the source and target languages.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Solid basic knowledge of Spanish. Excellent mastery of the target language.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

- Written preparation of translations at home (see course pack); - Group comparisons and critical correction of individual pieces of work; - Sight translation exercises.

Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)

Two hours of classes per week throughout the year. Compulsory preparation at home.

Assessment methods and criteria

- In January : an assessment worth 20% of the final grade is organised ;
- Throughout the year : individual translation, pieces of work of different texts in specific fields and continuous assessment (preparation of translations and active participation in class + tests which account for the final grade (30%) ;
- Written exam at the end of the year :  translation of a text. (50%)
