Learning unit contents
In order to succeed this course, the student has to prepare a written report and presents an oral presentation that is demonstrating either (A) his/her comprehension of a new topic through individual bibliographical research work or (B) his/her competencies in geographic data acquisition and processing.
The first part of the course is dedicated to information literacy. Geographical and geomatic resources available at the University will be presented. Among these, the course particularly addresses the discovery tool of the University libraries, bibliographic databases Scopus, GEOREF, International Geographical Bibliography, as well as some other specific resources. A part of the course is devoted to the research of cartographic documents (GEOKATALOG, regional, national, international cartographic websites). The correct writing of bibliographical references is also dealt with.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Teaching students to develop documentation research skills on a geographic topic, or to acquire and process geographic data.
Teaching students to develop bibliographic research skills and to correctly use bibliographic references.
Teaching students to communicate their results orally.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Geography or geomatics/geometrology courses related to the chosen topic.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The student has to perform individual research work or geographic data analysis. The student is encouraged to inform the supervisor about the progress of his/her work. The proposed subject is defined in close cooperation with the professors of the Bachelor degree. A list with topic proposals is provided to students.
An oral presentation of the work is to be organized in front of three reviewers (professors or scientists of the Geography Department).
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
Supervised self-learning. Introduction to information literacy is held in a computer room of the University.
Recommended or required readings
A tutorial involving information literacy is at the student's disposal.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark consists of two elements:
- 80 %: the bachelor thesis (60 % for the written report) and the oral presentation (40 %) are evaluated by three reviewers.
- 20 %: this part of the evaluation is dedicated to a documentation research on a given subject. This research is realized with tools that were used during the course. The evaluation is based on the quality of the documentation research, the formulation of search equations and the presentation of the bibliography.
