Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
This course is an introduction to documentation techniques, processing and representation of data. Following points will be discussed:
-Measurements and error analysis
-Graphical representation of data
-Data fitting
-Introduction to scientific writing
-Introduction to LaTeX
-Documentation techniques
-Preparing the exam
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of this course is to initiate the student to university-level scientific writing, teach them how to communicate science and how to realize neat and tidy project reports.
Students will learn to:
-estimate the error on data obtained based on measurements
-conveniently represent data on a graphic
-fit usual laws onto data points
-use the LaTeX language for scientific writing
-find trustful reference articles
-write a bibliography
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Science and mathematic (high school level). Basic informatics knowledge.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
For each thematic, a theoretical introduction is given at the beginning of the lesson. Tutorials (on computers) are then organized in order to confront the students to real situations.
Mode of delivery (face-to-face ; distance-learning)
The course consists in 10 lessons lasting 2 hours. Each lesson is composed of a theoretical and a applied part. The exact schedule of the course will be given at the beginning of the school year. Theory will be presented using slides that will be available on the teacher's website.
Recommended or required readings
Slides, Mathematica notebooks and LaTeX templates are available on the teacher's website. For more informations, students can have a look at:
-R. Lambert, « Le LaTeX, notions de base », cinquième édition, 160p. Edition de L'ULg.
-T. Bastin, « tutoriel Mathematica - tutfr.nb »
Assessment methods and criteria
The evaluation consists in a written exam during which the student will have to use all the learned competencies in order to realize a laboratory report in LaTeX. Students will be given a model report that they will have to reproduce as well as raw data which has to be represented graphically in the best possible way. A training session will be organized during the last lesson.
Work placement(s)
Organizational remarks
The teacher will answer to all questions during the teaching period. During the exams and official holidays, the teacher will not answer anymore. Practical informations will be displayed on the notice board of the Physic's Department.
