Learning unit contents

The course is an introduction to sociology of migration and ethnicity through the study of some of the main texts of the discipline drawn both from American and European sociology.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

The aim of the course is to provide the students with a theoretical basis as well as with a global picture of the classical American and European literature in the field of sociology of migration and ethnicity.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

A passive and active knowledge of written and spoken English is indispensable.


THIS IS NOT AN ENGLISH CLASS BUT ALL THE COURSE (INCLUDING THE EXAMS, ORAL PRESENTATIONS AND WRITTEN PAPERS), IS IN ENGLISH

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The students will be required to write one or several short indvidual or collective papers discussing articles (4-5 pages) allocated by the teacher .
In principle, the students will also make oral presentations in class PRESENCE IN CLASS IS REQUIRED: unjustified absence will be sanctioned: 1 point out of 20 per absence

The course could use 5 pedagogical tools: - Lectures by the teacher - Seminars based on the reading and discussion of texts as well as on oral presentations made by students -Lectures given by external guests -Personal or collective written papers -Field visit(s)
